چکیده

Different liquid phase thermal treatmentswere applied to a commercial activated carbon (Norit ROX 0.8) in order to produce modified activated carbons with varying surface chemistry and increased acidic character. Chemical characterization of the prepared materials includes determination of the point of zero charge and evaluation of the concentration and nature of acidic and basic surface functionalities by acid/base titrations and temperature programmed desorption. The prepared materials were used as catalysts in the catalytic wet peroxide oxidation of the acid dye Chromotrope 2R in order to assess their removal efficiency. The relationship between the surface chemistry and efficiency for dye removal is discussed. As expected, decreasing acidity of the catalysts surface will correlate with increasing dye conversion. Unexpectedly, treatment with sulphuric acid leads to a very high yield of dye removal which falls out of the previous correlation. This was explained in terms of the introduction of sulphur containing groups on the carbon surface, which promotes the surface interaction between the pollutant and hydrogen peroxide: higher production of hydroxyl radicals close to the pollutant leads to improved dye removal. In addition, reutilization studies show that the catalyst prepared by sulphuric acid treatment is able to keep its performance in successive runs. 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Influence of textural properties and iron content on the activated carbon performance for catalytic wet air oxidation of phenol

Catalytic Wet Oxidation is a promising treatment for wastewater containing refractory compounds, such as phenol. Activated carbon has demonstrated to perform as catalyst in wet oxidation, however it is not fully understood its role as catalyst. This study aims to clarify the effect of metal content, specifically iron and calcium, on the performance of a commercial activated carbon. Several modi...

Copper on Activated Carbon for Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation

Textile industry is an important source of water contamination. Some of the organic contaminants cannot be eliminated by nature in a reasonable period. Heterogeneous catalytic wet air oxidation is one of the most effective methods to purify wastewater with organic contaminants. In this work, catalysts based on copper supported on activated carbon were synthesized. The activated carbons were obt...

Degradation of paracetamol by catalytic wet air oxidation and sequential adsorption - Catalytic wet air oxidation on activated carbons.

The concern about the fate of pharmaceutical products has raised owing to the increasing contamination of rivers, lakes and groundwater. The aim of this paper is to evaluate two different processes for paracetamol removal. The catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of paracetamol on activated carbon was investigated both as a water treatment technique using an autoclave reactor and as a regenerativ...

Preparation and performance analysis of γ-Al2O3 supported Cu-Ru bimetallic catalysts for the selective Wet Air Oxidation of Aqueous Ammonia to Nitrogen.

Series of Copper Ruthenium (Cu-Ru) bimetallic catalysts supported on γ-Al2O3 with different metal loading are prepared and investigated for catalytic wet air oxidation of ammonia to nitrogen. The ammonia decomposition activity was studied at three different temperatures i.e. 150oC, 200oC, and 230 oC and it is found that catalytic activity increases with the increase in temperature along with th...

CWAO of phenol over activated carbon catalysts with hydrogen peroxide as promoter

Catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of phenol over activated carbon catalysts in presence of a typical promoter such as hydrogen peroxide has been studied. The experiments were carried out in a trickle-bed reactor at given operating conditions (Cinlet phenol= 1 g/L, Cinlet H2O2= 5g/L, T=127 oC, PT=8 atm and WCAT=2.5 g) in a wide range of space time values (W/QL=20-320 gCAT·h/L). The effect of th...
